Race Information

The Race

This “Mini Sprint” is a short, fast course, perfect for the first time triathlete. There is an adult race and a kid’s race. All of the proceeds from the event go to cancer research and the support families who are currently fighting cancer.

Keep TRIing until there's a cure.

The Swim
Adults will have a 200 yard pool swim in the fantastic Gleannloch Gators 8 lane competition pool (kids will swim 100 yards). The pool is located in a large athletic park with plenty of room for post race festivities. Start order will be based upon swim times for your race length. Racers will start at 10 second intervals.
The Bike
The bike route is a flat and fast 6 mile route. Enjoy the suburban views of Gleannloch Farms as you ride this out and back route. The kids will have a 3 mile course along the same route.
The Run
The adult run will be a 2 mile run around the athletic park (1 mile for the kids). The soft surface run will be easy on the joints and be cooler than running on pavement. Also, this allows the runners to begin to enjoy the post race festivities even before they are finished racing.

Purpose of the Event

The Stephanie Johnson Triathlon, also known as "The Stef" was began out of a love of the sport of triathlon and a woman who's battle with cancer is nothing short of inspiring. When first hearing of triathlon, many people think, "I could never do that," and then with determination, persistence and courage, they take the steps to race in their first triathlon. Likewise, many look at cancer patients and say, "I could never do that," yet when faced with the challenge, they rise and fight, no matter the odds of winning. Stephanie has done that and baffled the doctors. Facing the second deadliest cancer in the world, she has surpassed all expectations. Today, she is being honored in international medical journals, on TV commercials, in news broadcasts, in hospital brochures, educational videos and in this triathlon.

Our Goal

Last year we gave money to MD Anderson, to support groups and to 6 families who are in the battle against cancer. The thing that was most meaningful for us was delivering the checks to the families. It really made all of the hard work worth it.

This year we want to do more - and we need your help. Our goal is to give away $75,000 this year. To reach that goal, we are asking every racer to raise $50. We will help you do this. Tools will be available on the website. With each of us finding only $50, we will create a mini "Extreme Home Makeover" moment for some special families.

Beneficiaries

MD Anderson "Tri For Life" Fund

If it weren’t for cutting edge research and medications that are just available for human trials, Stephanie would likely have had a much different story. In order to continue treating, and hopefully curing, cancer, more research is needed. MD Anderson is among the best cancer facilities in the world in both research and treatment. We will donate money to the Tri For Life fund MD Anderson set up to advance research in Stephanie's honor.

Support Groups

An online support group for the spouses and significant others of young adult cancer patients. Visit them at www.youngcancerspouses.org. Also, local support groups provide a safe haven for cancer patients, spouses and kids to go where people can fully understand their plight. We want to support those efforts as well.

Cancer Families

The emotional impact of cancer on a young family is devastating. Financially, it can be catastrophic. We wanted to help local area families to directly cover their expenses, take a trip to escape or to do something nice for their kids. In our first year, we helped six families battling cancer. Each year, we hope to help more and more.
